Fishing for catfish????

So, me and my dad are going fishing for cats tonight we're looking to catch something of decent size. We only have two fishing spots where we are. One is a reservoir and another is a man made pond! The man made pond has a damn where it leads into a river with semi decent flowing water. I need to know, what kind of bait should I be using, and should I be targeting deeper spots or shallow spots? Cause the man made pound deepest spot is 6 foot.
