Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1 gameplay help please?

If you're at the part I'm thinking of with the 50. Cal sniper where you shoot the dude's arm off, then no it wouldn't matter if you only shot him they would still pursue you, and the second one I think you still have to wait for the chopper anyway, you could always try it again and take it easy.
